How to get content to go viral on Facebook/Twitter

One of the most powerful ways to get people to visit your website and read your content these days is using social media. We are sure that you have all dabbled with social media at least a little bit and if you haven’t, you are definitely doing something wrong. However, getting something to actually go viral on a social media website such as Facebook is a completely different story and we estimate that not many people really achieve it.

However, it usually isn’t as hard as you might think, you just need to be smart about it. Here are a few things that we think you should be doing if you want to get your content to go viral on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter (which everyone does right?).

#1 – Create amazing content

YouTube – A place for amazing video content.

So, you’ve created your content and now you want to unleash it to the world. Before you start trying to do anything with it, you need to stop and think. What you need to think about is whether the content is actually good enough. Sure, it might be a decent piece of content that is informative and you have spent a couple of hours writing but if that was all that it took for a piece of content to go viral, everything would.

You put it simply, your content needs to be better. It needs to be incredible, amazing, mindblowing, stunning…you get the idea. Think about it, people are bombarded with links on Facebook and Twitter all day, every day so if you aren’t showing them something that is going to blow them away, you don’t really stand a chance.

Creating amazing content is the hardest part of this entire process as almost everything has been covered online as you will probably find. However, there is still plenty left to be done, no matter what niche you’re working in!

Here are a couple of things that create viral content:

Humour: People love being made to laugh and I bet that half of the stuff you see shared by your friends and Family on Facebook or Twitter is humorous in nature. In fact, it is almost 100% necessary to have humorous content or you aren’t going to get very far really. Still, there is a lot of funny content out there so your content is going to have to be extremely funny and original. It is certainly not an easy task.

Amazing: Another kind of content that is extremely likely to go viral is when it is amazing. When we say this, we don’t just mean that you think you’ve done a good job and that it is amazing, we mean that it truly is amazing. Maybe you’ve seen a UFO or found proof that aliens are on Mars. You need to be catching people’s attention so that they share the content.

Controversy: Lastly, you could consider making some kind of controversial content. This is personally not really preferred but it usually does generate quite a stir, especially if the topic is quite relevant. If you have a genuine opinion on something then you might find this a bit easier.

#2 – Optimise your site

This is one of the most important things to consider when trying to get a piece of content to go viral as failure to do this will almost certainly ruin your chances. You need to optimise your site so that it has social share buttons. When we say this, we mean good ones too that are very prominent on the page. There have been no end of times that i’ve visited a site that had a really good piece of content and I didn’t see any share buttons so I didn’t share it with my friends.

There are tonnes of social sharing plug-ins out there for WordPress and other content management systems so make sure that you are using them. Make sure that you choose one that has the big names there too including Facebook Like/Share, Tweet, StumbleUpon, Google Plus and any others.

One thing you should make sure to do is not to include too many of these. A lot of sites have about 20 social sharing buttons and this really isn’t good as it’s too much for most visitors and will put them off. Just have the big names there as we have mentioned and maybe a couple of other ones.

#3 – Give it a head start

Give it a head start with high quality guest posting.

If you have a great piece of content, it needs a head start. Now, if you have a Twitter or Facebook account that has a really engaged audience of thousands of fans, you will have no problem giving any piece of content a head start. However, if you don’t have this, you are going to need to think outside the box.

One thing that you can do is to create a guest post with a link to your content from a relevant website. You need to ensure that the website you are guest posting on is of great quality however and has a lot of traffic. The more traffic, the more likely the people are to click the link to your website. The more relevant your content is to the topic you’ve guest posted on the site, the better your chances too. You only need a couple of hundred people to start sharing your amazing content to start off the process.

If possible, you could combine the two things (social media and guest posting). The more you can get your content out there through publicity initially, the better chance it has of actually going viral.

Of course, there’s no magic solution to a viral piece of content and sometimes, a viral piece of content will go viral without having to do any of this but it will narrow your chances. Even if it doesn’t go super viral, doing all of the above is bound to bring in a good amount of visitors if it’s done correctly.
