Question Too Risky to Change Title

My website sells furniture but the homepage has bedroom furniture in the meta title. It ranks 2nd place for bedroom furniture but not for the more generic term.

If I remove the bedroom out of the meta title (mainly because that's not all we do) I fear this will reduce the rankings of the bedroom furniture and not lift the rankings of the more generic term enough to counteract.

Is it too risky to change the title?

It's hard to give an accurate assessment without seeing the current Title and the structure of your home page/navigation.

However it's probably not advisable to change a core phrase that you still want to rank for without a proper strategy, does the domain have a decent backlink profile ? are you relying to heavly on homepage ranking when it should maybe be inner pages pulling specific phrases ?

I think you need to take the hit in the short term. Home page should be for generic furniture terms. Then work on optimising a page specifically for bedroom furniture (with associated highly relevant terms). The specific bedroom furniture page will be a better landing page for the user anyway, which will hopefully lead to higher conversion (which after all is the name of the e-commerce game :))

Of course, it will be hard to rank for generic 'furniture' anyway. Competition will be high and as well as on-site SEO (title tag, keywords on page, site structure, internal links etc), you would need a good backlink profile to rank.

Well, as per my experience. It will disturb your whole ranking because you are going to change the meta tag and may be those back links which are being created by using the meta tags may get affected. So, yeah it is somewhat risky situation but if you are willing to do it than you should do it. Because more generic terms might look more appealing.

Please don't remove the word 'bedroom' from the metatitle! It is fine that you want more generic terms like 'furniture' and all, but you may loose what you have! People visiting your site will anyhow reach on 'other' furniture available.
Nowadays it is difficult to predict as to what drives Google to formulate SERPs. So it would be quite clever of you to thank - for being there at rank 2 spot, even though it is for bedroom furniture.

Is there a reason not to add to the homepage title, e.g. bedroom, living room and bathroom furniture (whatever includes the most generic search terms without being too long for a title)

And of course specific pages with appropriate titles for each room of furniture you cater for, plus other search terms (pine furniture, oak furniture, retro furniture, reproduction, tables, chairs, chaise longes etc. etc.
