Hi

I am puzzled with how Google is ranking a specific page on my website. The url of this page is:
cheapasprints.com/product/550gsm-pvc-banner-printing/

The page has the keyword "cheap pvc banners" is placed in the title, meta description tag and content. But is not ranking at all for the keyword search "cheap pvc banners". I mean I would understand if this was ranking on the 5th or 6th page but it is just not appearing at all in Google search rankings. Websites that are totally unrelated to the topic show up before my page. This is puzzling right? I can see that the page has been indexed when using the site: search command in Google but it should be ranking somewhere in Google for those keywords.

This is not happening to any of my other pages in Google just to this specific one which is frustrating. Should I delete the page and start again or will this not make a difference?

Any guidance will be appreciated as I am not sure what I am doing wrong

Hi @umarglobal, I checked by entering the keyword "cheap pvc banners", and it appears a shop page of your site is ranking on the SERPs.

The blog link is,

But I think your problem is that you want to rank the above-mentioned URL. Am I right?

Hi

Thank you for getting back to me. Yes, that page appears but the following page is what should rank as it has the keywords.

Without having the backend access to your site and google search console data, I cannot give you the exact solution but I'll give you some possible reasons due to which the problem occurs. Also, I'll be giving you some possible solutions to your issue.

Before moving ahead let consider the page which is ranking is Y and the page you wanted to actually rank is X.

So possible reasons due to which Google ranks a wrong URL can be:

  • Improper canonicalization
  • Keyword Cannibalization on Y
  • Lack of content on page X. (personally I don't think this is the problem in your Case)
  • Accidently blocking the page X from crawlers
  • The number of internal and external links is much higher on page X than on page Y.
are some possible reasons that a wrong page is being portrayed on the SERPs.'

So what can you do for this?
This often happens with site owners that Google tends to rank the wrong page for a keyword. But there's nothing to worry, just perform the following steps:

Step 1: Search for the actual Issue
First, check if the page Y actually exists for the keyword "cheap PVC banners" (it does as you have already provided the link here in your thread. Also, I've checked using the "in site:" operator.

Secondly, the issue could occur because of some crawling and indexing problems on page X. You might have accidentally blocked page X from crawling from your robots.txt file.

You've have not properly interlinked you page X as compared to page Y.

Step 2: Implementations according to what you've diagnosed
According to whatever you've diagnosed in Step 1 you can implement the following things.

Add more content
You can add more relevant content if you feel your page is lagging behind in terms of keywords.

Reindexing your page
You can submit the URL for reindexing from Google Search Console and wait until the URL is indexed.

Analyze Your User Data
You can take to help of Google Analytics for knowing how users are coming to your page X.

Are they directly landing on your page? If yes, then check how long are they staying there and what is the bounce rate.
And if no, then check if how they are reaching your page X.
screenshot-newtab-2020.03.16-12_07_19.png

Try to analyze the traffic difference of single page in all page report and landing page report, and try to increase the landing page traffic of your relative page.

Check Your External Linking
Check your external link data for pages X and Y. Now, there could be a possibility that the external linking of page Y can be overwhelming when compared to page X.

Step 3: Degrade Page Y
This is an anti-SEO activity. You have to degrade the performance of the non-relevant page so that your relevant page can rank. You can do this by taking away all the keywords and related terms, changing the internal links, and your external linkers to relink to page X instead of page Y.

Step 4: When nothing works.
At the end if nothing works you can try applying the following solution:

You can redirect the page Y to page X and create a page Y2 that has similar content as page Y, (obviously you've to modify the page content so as to prevent plagiarism).

Or,
You can simply take the help of a professional SEO Executive for correcting all your on-page issues.

Thank You !!

Instead of deleting or launching the page again for Google users to be able to access your page, here is what you can do that might help –

  • Check keyword density – Copy the content on the page and paste it in a word density checker to estimate the keyword density percentage on your webpage. In case the density of primary and secondary keywords is insufficient, add keywords strategically to rank your page on SERP.
  • Crawler inaccessibility – You may have accidentally blocked the URL of the concerned page from Google crawlers. Unhide the webpage to allow crawler bots access your webpage and rank it as per SEO compliance

Yes, I mentioned that point in Step 2 "The Google Search Console" part so yes, you're absolutely right. ;)
