Competing with Big Forums

So we all know there's always a big forum in the niche you want to create yours in(usually). The question is, do you think some people just decide not to make a forum in that niche, or at all, because they are too afraid of being shoved out by the competition?

Well promotion forums struggled because there was so many big ones but I'm always prepared to take on the biggies.
