Core Update Impact: Keywords Dropping from 2nd to 8th Position

Hi everyone,

After the recent Google core update, I’ve noticed a sharp drop in keyword rankings for my site, which focuses on iOS apps. Some keywords that used to rank in the 2nd position have now fallen to 8th, leading to a noticeable traffic decline.

Here’s some context:

  • The ranking drop started immediately after the core update.
  • I haven’t made significant changes to my content or structure recently.
  • My competitors’ pages seem to be ranking higher, but I’m unsure why.
I’d really appreciate insights on the following:

  1. What could be causing such drastic drops in keyword positions?
  2. Are there specific areas (content quality, backlinks, user engagement, etc.) I should prioritize reviewing for an iOS app-focused site?
  3. Any tools or methods to better analyze how this update might have affected my rankings?

There is currently December Core update in progress which is causing a fair bit of volitility.

I would probably air on hte side of caution making any significant changes, as it wouldnt be the first time that a core update rolled out in October/November, and in the November/December one certain things rolled back and returned to normal.

Its hard to say exact reasons for potential drops as typically dropping to a lower position on the first page, just indicates a few areas are ticking Googles boxes better.

This could be anything from:
User experience/interaction, traffic and CTR,
Updated content
More regular social media posts and updates contributing to traffic
More consistent in link building
Better onside SEO
Schema markup.
Technical SEO such as server side changes
Search intent etc etc etc

The list could go on and on, Ultimately you need to assess how you believe your competitors could be being seen as doing something better.

Take a look at SERPs, is there any notiable difference in the shift of intent ? What type of pages are ranking ( categories, blogs, products etc ) and does your site follow that same structure.

Hi everyone,

I’m also seeing similar fluctuations on my site after the recent Google core update. Some of my keywords haven’t completely disappeared from the SERPs but have dropped significantly in rankings. For example, my main target keyword that was consistently ranking in the 2nd position has now fallen to the 8th.

I’ve analyzed the competitors that overtook my site, and interestingly, their content or structure doesn’t seem drastically different from mine. Could someone help me identify what might be causing this? Here’s a link to my site for reference: scarletapps.com.

Also, does anyone know if the ranking shifts could stabilize once the core update is fully rolled out? Any insights on areas like user engagement, on-site SEO, or technical fixes I should prioritize would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hey, core updates can be rough. These updates usually shake things up for a few weeks before settling down.
From what I've seen with iOS app sites, Google's been pushing hard for really detailed, user-focused content lately. Maybe take a look at the pages that outranked you - are they covering more user questions or going more in-depth? Sometimes it's not super obvious at first glance.
It takes time. I've seen rankings bounce back on their own after updates before.

Last time I got hit by a code update was in March.
What I did to overcome this was make sure my content was different from what others are providing. I even changed the theme, I continuously made sure google knows My website is unique. In December, my website is finally back and ranking higher than most competitors.
