Custom Software - Your Take

So, if you were to create a website software, how would you design it? How would it be marketed? Would it be open source or paid? What features would be included in the default set up? What would be the focus of the software and what demographic would it appeal too?

I've come across a few custom softwares and most aren't executed well. I'm curious to see if I'm just to picky or I'm looking for all the wrong things when on custom made websites.
