Dropped Domains - Good or Bad ?

Hi Guys... and Girls.

I am new here, trying to self teach myself SEO... I never expect to be an expert, but just trying to have a understanding of some of the basic things...

So my first question for the guru's out there... I am looking at buying dropped domains... wondering what the pro's and con's are... and what I should be looking for in a dropped domain ?

I am using a site and it gives various details about the domain... but not sure what I really should be looking for...

A for example is it shows the sites registration date... and I understand how a site registered years ago is beneficial to SEO... but surely if the site as been dropped for a while, it would be a new registration date and start from scratch...

And backlinks, do they really give a site any kind of SEO ? I was told to buy some and forward them into my main site, is this correct ?

It's a much debated subject and its very much on how you plan on using those domains and how good and related they are.

You have a couple of initial options :

1. Redirect the domain to a highly relevant money site, thus taking advantage of any existing backlinks
2. Create a website along the same lines as what was previously on the domain, making it as high quality as possible and then using it to link to other related sites.

There are pros and cons in both areas. Typically its only worth doing when a domain has exceptional stats, such as backlinks from highly respected sources and no low quality links. There is no real statistic or measure as to what makes a domain worthy of picking up, its a matter of analysing the domain, its backlink profile and its usage to determine if its going to be a worthy asset.

You can use DA, PA, TF and CF as "guides" but they are easily faked, especially with massively spammed domains giving false readings so the best method is manual auditing and understanding what you are looking at.

Do they work ? If done correctly they can be beneficial. Be mindful when redirecting a domain to your main site, if it has some great backlinks, its likely it will also have a bunch of low quality and branded ones too which will also be redirecting, those could do more harm than good if you don't do your due diligence.

Obviously the second option of creating new website and using it to link to your main site, can be less risky, but there are other risks involved with that.

Neither practice is trouble free, both are easy to get into hot water with. So if in doubt...avoid it.

What is actually drop domain? How can i use them to make money? I searched but i do not get proper details yet.

Drop, which had a good position - this is very good. Chances are good that your sites on these domains will also have good positions and will give traffic. In my opinion, such drops are significantly better than domains with a large number of backlinks and high Moz Domain Rank, etc., because search engines have already confirmed their credibility.

A dropped domain is a good idea. Before buying you must check a few important things like PA/DA of that domain, check domain with google banned check, check google Adsense ban, check website archive, check all backlinks etc.

Such a good debate that we've been having at work. Sites like Ahref and Moz are great but yes like other posters have said, they're easy to fake and can fluctuate. Keeping your eye on traffic, page score and rank is the best method.
