You can basically place your advertising banners anywhere on your website, but for the most revenue, regarding eCPM, you should always add it inside or directly above the content. On the left sidebar is also advised, because humans always view the website in a F-shape. Below the footer will mostly result in a revenue cut of only under 10%.
