Question JSON-LD Markup hurting Map Pack listing ?

Has anyone else come across a problem where all their competitors have just a simple organisation Schema listing their brand name and "sameas" social media profiles, or have no schema markup at all, yet they are constantly listed in every map pack? Yet a site which has Localbusiness schema, Organisation and coordinates listed rarely gets in the map pack listings ?

I've now seen 3 different niches show that having no schema seems to be better than having some. Thoughts and experiences ?
