How strict is the character limit for meta titles and descriptions?

I understand the limit is 60, but is 61,65,70 characters okay?

Thanks

Hello, actually when you exceed the limit, extra characters will not only appear in the SERP. That's why it's important. Other than that there is no problem.

Hey! Totally get your struggle. Most engines cut off around 60, but pushing it a bit won't hurt much. Just keep the main message in that sweet spot. Cheers!

Meta Title:
  • Limit: Around 50-60 characters.
  • Note: This may vary slightly depending on the search engine.
Meta Description:
  • Limit: Around 150-160 characters.
  • Note: Again, this can vary, and some search engines may display more characters.

The important thing is to find something in these characters that can attract the visitor. This is why limitation makes sense.

For meta tags, Google recommends keeping titles under 60 characters and descriptions under 155 characters, but slight overages (up to 70 characters for the title) may be acceptable, though some text might be truncated in search results. To ensure full visibility, it's best to stick to the recommended limits.

Why would you use 61,65,70 characters in a meta description? Is there any advantage to this? I would just keep it under 155 characters like everyone says

The general recommendation is to keep meta titles around 60 characters and meta descriptions around 155-160 characters to ensure they display fully in search results. While Google can still index titles or descriptions that are slightly longer (e.g., 61-70 characters), they may get truncated, especially on mobile devices or in different display contexts. To avoid any cutoffs, it's best to stay within the recommended limits, but slightly exceeding them won't necessarily harm your SEO—it just risks truncating the text in search results.

Hi Gemma23,
While it's best to stay within the 60-character limit for meta titles and 160 characters for descriptions, going slightly over (e.g., 61-70 characters) is usually okay. However, search engines may truncate the text if it's too long, so it's ideal to keep them within the recommended limits for optimal display.
Hope that helps!
