What type of backlinks do you want to get? What's your site about?

The same way as in 2019 and 2015. Analyse your competition, build lists and test a lot.
I'd suggest Pulno for backlinks.

Quality backlinks play an important role in:
  • Ranking your site.
  • Quick indexing of your web page.

In fact, the External Link Anchor Text and the Strength (Quality) Of External Play an important role as ranking factors.

So, here are some best practices for getting quality backlinks:

Guest Posting

The number one and the oldest technique is guest posting. The practice of sharing valuable and quality content on other domains for free is known as guest posting. This is a very old technique of getting backlinks and has been popular because it is a win-win situation for both the domains. One gets free content to share with his or her audience while the other earns a high-quality link.

Try finding out high-quality domains that fall in your niche and offer to contribute as an author.

Hunting For Broken Links

Broken links are a problem that can never be solved completely. Even big authoritative sites fall prey to this problem, you need to find such opportunities. Broken links hamper the user experience and you can fix them by interchanging the links with your relevant page.

In this process again you've to find domains of your that have high authority and with the help of any tool you can find the broken links.

Skyscrapping Your Content

Skyscraping is a method of generating content on a topic that is already performing well. The motive behind this is to create content that can outrank an already well-performing content piece.

For creating a skyscraper content find out the following:
What questions has your competitor left unanswered?
Which part of your competitor content is complex and can be simplified by you?
Are there any updates to the topic that the competitor has left out?

After creating the content you can outreach the domains from which your competitor has received backlinks.

These are some of the methods by which you can earn some quality backlinks for your site.

Hi

Its a question of how credible you'd want your site to be. However, there's a lot of practices such as buying backlinks, which are unethical practices and would go on to hurt your website in the long term. From Google's perspective, this may penalise your website in the long term.

Best practices to build backlinks in 2020

is to focus on creating high-quality content, which shall outrank your competitors. Create content that shall benefit your users, encouraging your viewers to read your content. Google is interested in providing the best user experience and how you can achieve this objective is by putting your viewers first. Bare in mind your viewers who are reading your contents, and third parties why would they would want to link back to you?. I understand users and by listening to them.

A few questions before creating your content?

  • Who is going to read your post?
  • Is the post relevant to your reader?
  • How can I engage my viewers?
  • Are they enough users searching for your targeted search query? i.e. are you answering a question on your post, then create a responsive post.
  • What is the purpose of creating your post? e.g. is it solving a problem or a guide?.

Content Creation:

The primary key is to create high-quality content, which isn't available from your competitors thoroughly in detail. Paying attention to detail is the key, then they are various factors for your content to be ranked. Analyse your competitors and search volume and provide better quality content. How does your content post provide a better user experience? provide improved quality media I.e. images, infographic, viewability of your post, the format of your content shown to your users. In addition, another advantage of creating high-quality content is creating more user engagement and this results in reduced bounce rate. Google will find your content more detailed than your competition with more users are engaging with your content, giving another reason to google rank your content and more third parties to link back to you.

Does word count matter? and choosing the right topic?

According to a study from Backlinko average word count on a post is approx 1800-1900 words. Depending on what kind of post your producing. Suppose I'm a service sector providing IT services, you may find search queries on google suggestions, e.g. how to recycle your IT equipment? You may find they aren't many results on SERP's page, however, this query is being suggested by google suggestion tool and searched often. The following step you maybe you may cross-reference this query on google keyword tool, do not use tools for search analysis as this doesn't provide an accurate result, neither does Google. Google is more credible of as in contrast to paid tools and the closest tool to it. Create a post of 1500+ words, answering the question to the relevant search query. This is called a responsive post, a responsive post tend to be short in word count as in comparison. The idea is you can write a more quantity of 1500+ word count posts answering user's search queries around your industry. Therefore you start gaining momentum with your industry and making your source more credible. This is more of a short term strategy, as Google recognises your post as answering a certain query also they maybe a chance for your post to be featured on Google Snippet search results. The moment you start producing quality and quantity posts around your industry, focusing on keywords that are less competitive. Google will recognise your source to be more credible than your competitors. Your content is more relevant to your users and more in-depth. From this organic process, you shall start to find more sources trying to link build within your industry, as your content is unique.

How to target keywords around your industry?

Producing backlinks around your industry keywords, yet following a similar process as above. Create enough responsive posts ideally 5-10, gain momentum and start ranking for those responsive queries. The next step is to create a pillar post which is a detailed in-depth post, this may take days to create. You'll find keywords around your industry to be more competitive difficult to rank. The key is to produce unique and in-depth providing more of a chance for third parties to link back to your site. Usually producing 1500+ word count around competitive industry doesn't really tend to work well. Why should any third party link back to your site? well, the answer is simple Google is filled with contents that are filled with 1500-2000 word count posts around service-based keywords or money keywords. Furthermore with DA and credible sources so why should you rank?.

Conclusion
  1. Research search queries relevant to your industry, e.g. solving a problem within your industry.
  2. Ask relevant questions as displayed above, e.g. who is my viewer?, what is the purpose of this content? etc.
  3. Structure your content, what kind of post are your going to produce? e.g. responsive posts, answering queries. Snowball effect gain momentum within your industry with responsive post and produce 4000+ word count post with high competitive keywords.
  4. Create in-depth and unique content, considering improve user experience, reduce bounce rate, creating user engagements = Google to rank your contents + and third to link back to you. Provide a link at the bottom of the page allowing users to copy your link and share your content.
  5. Bottom line - Work harder than your competitors, think of the user first.
I hope this post helps, any questions please dont hesitate to ask?. Please share if you like this post.

“Old is gold.”

Backlinks techniques are still the same. Yah in 2020 you can add some new ways in your list. But your old tactics like Guest Post, Article directory posting, Business listing, Blog commenting, Forum posting will still play a vital role in 2020. Here I am giving you some latest techniques in 2020:

  • Build Links from Out-dated Assets.
  • Publish “Skyscraper” Content
  • Create backlink from image and video sharing sites.
  • Reviews and comparisons
  • Podcast guesting
  • Social sharing
These are not that much popular but very effective. So do basic research and start creating backlink using these techniques.

If you are looking to do SEO for an educational institute site, then you need to work local listings/citations, guest posting, and work on Keywords. Also, try to follow one of the latest trends on your site e.g. voice search optimization.
