Timeless SEO vs. The Latest SEO Trends

Which of the two do you think is better to specialize in; timeless SEO, meaning optimization that the search engines recommend, such as Social Media links, moderate keyword SEO, internal linking structures, site maps, etc., or the latest trends in SEO, such as article marketing, backlink building, and paying for backlinks or articles to give your site a temporary boost?

My sites are usually built for the long term. I like to have them update-proof, and so I will specialize in the organic, proven methods for SEO before I even touch the latest trends that can be whisked away with one Google update. People always look for a quick-fix, but it may not always be the best choice when building a long-term image on a blog or forum. What are your sentiments on this?
