I am completely new in internet marketing. I have been told to do some forum posts to increase ranking of certain webpages. However, just commenting on certain random forum pages doesn't seem very intuitive and people will think of it as spam. I don't know what I should be doing. Does forum posting work and if my account gets banned or something due to that? I mean how is it possible to work like that? Any help will be appreciable. If the question has already been asked please forgive me and point me to that thread in such cases. Thank you.

The key is to focus on providing genuine, helpful contributions to the community, not just self-promotional posts. Take the time to read threads, understand the topics being discussed, and share your own relevant insights and experiences. Build up rapport gradually by being an active, engaged member.

First of all, you should realize that forums are a place where people share their experiences, knowledge, and insights, and the idea is that members should be useful to the forum, and the forum should be useful to the members.
As far as internet marketing and benefiting from a forum, the only benefit of forums that can be considered is pumping up your personal brand, which is the same as pumping up your website brand.
Be useful to the forum. Talk about yourself, as each forum suggest fill personal information about you (gender, location, personal website). Further, if the community finds you useful and interesting, then everyone who is interested will be able to go to your profile and see information about you, as well as visit your site in case of interest.
I understand internet marketing for my website exactly like this.

Forum posting can work for SEO if done correctly, but spamming random forums is ineffective and can harm your reputation or get your account banned. Instead, focus on engaging genuinely in niche forums relevant to your industry. Provide valuable insights, answer questions thoughtfully, and include links only when they truly add value to the discussion. Build credibility by being active over time, rather than posting just for backlinks. Always check the forum's guidelines to avoid violating their rules. Done right, this strategy can help build authority and drive quality traffic to your site.

Forums can work, but don’t just spam links, cause people’ll notice, and you might get banned. Be helpful first, drop links later (if it’s cool with the rules). Most forum links are nofollow, so they won’t boost rankings directly, but they can still drive traffic.

If forums feel sketchy, try guest posts or social media instead. Just don’t be that spammy guy lol

If your forum content is creative then views of your thread/reply will be high and in return your website will get views by direct or organic views.

Relevant traffic improve your website ranking.
