When to quit?

At what point do you decided to cut your losses and give up on a site that doesnt seem to be progressing at all?

Always a tough one, although it depends on the site, the business model and of course your desire and drive its often hard to judge when enough is enough.

Most people drag it out much longer than they should in a last ditch effort, My general rule of thumb is if there are thoughts starting to creep in that it may not be viable..........then it could be time to start weighing up options.

How long have you been working on the site and what do you wish to achieve with it ? Have you carried out any kind of market research to judge what potential it could have ?

i started it about 4 months ago and I know it has decent potential but i thought i would get increased traffic quicker over time, originally this was a side project to hopefully make money while i get my proper career off the ground but its made literally nothing and cost me hosting for a few months so it feels like its best to cut my losses and not spend any more time on it. i think over a course of a few years that it could be major but my efforts would still be better spend elsewhere in that scenario

Hi, I'm new to the forum but have been making websites / marketing for 6 year, mostly unsuccessfully purely because I didn't cut my loses for 5 years, this was because i tried taking on a huge niche - clothing, as an affiliate marketer. I just saw how many millions are spent on clothing each year and wanted a share.

It was a really hard decision to make but after doing I I felt much more confident about taking on a new challenge as I knew what not to do this time.

If you've researched the keywords and competition etc. and can see potential I'd stick with it, but only if you still have the passion for it. As soon as the passion for the site dies it becomes a chore and it will be reflected in the quality of the site.

4 months is still very young, even if you were pumping exceptional content out daily, reaching out for social and link building efforts, 4 months would be a hard push to consider something a "success" or "failure".

I've often found in many niches that you can go for months with little movement and then all of a sudden get a jump in traffic and revenue as things start to click together.

If it was easy and quick, we'd all be millionaires by now I generally give every project 12 months at least to get a good handle on expectations, progress and enough data to decide if its going to be worth while or not.

I think you should never lose hope if your site is not getting enough visitors or have low payout. You can try different practices to improve your ranking and so that you might get more and more visitors. You should focus on the quality content. You can get data from different authentic sources like Wikipedia, Quora, Qanda and other official sites. After writing the great article you must ensure that you have eliminated the plagiarism. Once the article is ready to be posted. Do focus on an On-page and Off-page SEO. Ups and downs are part of life and one should never give up.

Four months is practically nothing. You need more time to even get noticed by search engines. Why don't you re-think about why this site is not working? may be you find the missing ingredients and start making some money. Than you just have to scale your $1 to $100. You need to be persistent with your effort. Nothing is easy when it comes to e-business these days.
