Did Anyone Make Money From Youtube?

So what happens if you just have a standard Youtube account and upload some personal videos - you just don't get paid at all? That sounds kind of silly that you need to take an additional step to join into some program to get paid. Why don't they pay all users who are uploading content and generating views simply for being a member of Youtube?

Yes, I've heard that you can make a lot of money on Youtube but you have to have very unique and interesting content that people would like to view; but personally I haven't made any money on Youtube because I haven't come up with any ideas as to what to upload as yet.
