Does Moz Spam score really works? I've been seeing the spam score to my website in Moz but when checked in SEMrush it shows no toxic links.

They have different criteria for assessing risk. Some SEO programs will show you x link as highly toxic while another one will show it as 100% safe. I have few websites linked between it. Some of my websites are being rated as toxic by Semrush for no particular reason. Within the same campaign, they have a page with recommended links and the same website rated as toxic is recommended for linking. So i don`t know anymore.

No, it's not. Spam Score mainly shows the percentage of sites with similar features. Google has some other ways to check your website spam. Google has penalised any website with Low quality / irrelevant backlinks, duplicate content, thin content, poor on-page and off-page SEO. So, apply your SEO strategy to maintain Google’s Algorithm.

@Subhodip has said very right. Spam score represents the percentage of sites found similar to sites that have been penalized or banned by Google.

The scale starts with the minimum value of 1% to a maximum value of 100%.

This means:
  • 1-30% (low)
  • 31-60% (medium)
  • 61-100% (high)

A high spam score for your site doesn't necessarily mean you are owning a spammy site but for sure its a warning that means the site has to inspected for elements that might be causing such a high score.

There are 27 signals on which the Spam Score of the site is determined:
  • A low number of pages found.
  • Domain name length
  • Domain name having numerals
  • Presence of Google Font API
  • GTM
are some of the factors that act as signals for calculating the Spam Score. Making it clear that Google does not consider Spam Score as a factor for penalizing your site. But never do the mistake of ignoring it because it might later lead to actually penalizing your site.
