From the 1st September 2020 our eCommerce site saw a big increase in direct traffic. From approx. 2,000 a day to 12,000.
  • The majority is from Frankfurt, Dublin and Ashburn.
  • Desktop traffic split between Firefox and Chrome
  • From looking at the logs we've attributed much higher than usual traffic from Googlebots

According to the web developers, no changes were made to the site around this time that would account for this change.

Have you seen anything similar or can recommend what this could be please?

There will be peaks of traffic atm, all due to covid lockdowns, it's having huge turn effects on search engines and website traffic, do not update or change anything on the website, everything will balance out when the lockdowns globally are all over.

Direct traffic might be a bit suspect. If you're able to segment that traffic in Analytics can you see whether it's at all valuable? Does it bounce? Does it stay on site? Convert?

If it is very poor traffic it might not be particularly valid traffic
