Em not sure, I just love the wordpress plugin system in whole, the no need to download installs.

I'm not sure either. After I get some time for my personal site/blog, I'll do some experimentation, but for now I have no preference.

I have a few installed I swear by, the one to stop spam - Akismet is awesome for starters.
