Hi

I am looking at learning SEO I am from a software support background and want to get involved!
Any recommendations on how you guys and gals started learning. Good websites or books that you found useful? I am reading https://www.searchenginejournal.com/
learning about SEMrush, Raven tools and Screaming frog

The end game is to start with some friends businesses websites Local SEO and see where the journey takes me.

Thanks

Welcome Archimedes,

It's a long old road to travel but the basic's as you've probably already established can be widely available from blogs and sites around the web, the real learning experience in my opinion is real world experience and accomplishing something as as result, whether that be revenue gain, lead generation or traffic.

I would always recommend starting out, experimenting and fine tuning your methods on your own sites first, jumping straight in there to someone's business can be extremely dangerous for both you as being liable, and the business possibly getting penalised or their reputation tarnished.

You can't go far wrong with the information sources you've mentioned.

https://ahrefs.com/blog/

Just bear in mind that what is written in many publications assumes a certain level of experience and ability, with many generalising to provide "safe" information to the masses should less experienced users read it.

Good luck with your quest :) And should you have specific questions that need other opinions please don't forget us here :)

No problem, I'd love to be able to recommend some books as well but I'm afraid I'm not much of a book worm, I believe I've only read a couple of books since 1998 and those were nothing to do with SEO :) ( Sun Tzu's Art of war and Doyle Brunsons Super System.......plus a business related one but I can't think of the name )

Hopefully someone else will come along and comment that has found an SEO / Marketing related Book worth a read.
